Uruguay too slick for sluggish Russian Federation

Jose Giminez

Giminez scored Uruguay's first goal at this year's World Cup the winner in the 1-0 victory against Egypt

"They (Russia) had hard times, they lacked experience, but the managed to overcome their problems, which were clearly obvious in their (preceding to the World Cup) friendly fixtures".

Edinson Cavani became just the second player to score a goal in three separate World Cup tournaments for Uruguay (2010, 2014 and 2018) after his strike partner Luis Suarez.

Both Egypt and Saudi Arabia lost their first two games and will be hoping to pocket an elusive win avoid finishing bottom of the group.

Luis Suarez. Uruguay haven't looked terribly impressive at this World Cup but have managed to remain flawless in the group stages thanks to a miserly defence and the efforts of their talisman.

Luis Suarez grabbed his second goal of the tournament to open Uruguay's account with a free kick after 10 minutes and they doubled the lead with an own goal from Russia's Denis Cheryshev soon after.

The fortunes for Russian Federation just got worse as the first half wore on, and the hosts were reduced to 10 men just beyond the hour mark when Igor Smolnikov was sent off after picking up his second yellow card.

- Uruguay striker Luis Suarez is now his country's second outright top goalscorer at the World Cup with seven goals, only Oscar Miguez (8) has netted more.

Uruguay - Muslera 6, Coates 6, Godin 7, Caceres 6, Torreira 8, Nandez 6, Vecino 7, Bentancur 7, Laxalt 7, Suarez 7, Cavani 7.

Hosts Russia have made history by making the best start by a host nation in World Cup tournament, beating Saudi Arabia 5-0 in the opening match of the tournament.

Cherchesov's men fell further back after a fortuitous strike from Laxalt changed course following a deflection off Cheryshev's heel, leaving goalkeeper Igor Afinkeev wrong footed in the 27th minute.

With an eye on the next game, Cheryshev - easily Russia's best player on the pitch - was replaced by defender Mario Fernandes, who did offer some stability to the defence. They will take on the Group B victor on July 1.

Uruguay striker Luis Suarez has dedicated his side's 3-0 win over Russian Federation at the World Cup finals to the national team's travelling supporters.

23' GOAL! Uruguay 2-0 Russia: Uruguay have scored a second!

Uruguay, by contrast, are perfectly set-up to keep teams at arm's length and they had few problems during a second period that at times meandered to a procession, Edinson Cavani converting from close range in the final minute to complete a comfortable 3-0 victory.

Cavani scored the third of the game at 90 minutes- the game finished 3-0 in favour of Uruguay.
