Forecasters warn storms could bring more flooding Wednesday, but say the heavy rains will be isolated and not widespread. MANDATORY EVACUATIONS underway from the Dam at Lake Shore Dr to Lake Tahoma Rd (NC 80) to the confluence of the Catawba River near Resistoflex Rd and Riverside Park.
The flooding dangers began late Tuesday when a flash flood emergency was declared for McDowell County, including the cities of Marion and Old Fort. The emergency has been canceled and the evacuation order was rescinded, McDowell County Emergency Management said in an update. State officials said the "primary concerns right now are the stability of mountain slopes and several dams".
While the storm had weakened by Thursday, it was still dumping rain across large swathes of the country, according to CNN meteorologists.
WSOC reported there were "several" landslides in McDowell County and that four swift water rescues were carried out overnight.
Residents in Old Fort, Pleasant Gardens and areas of Marion were also evacuated for flooding and landslides as rivers and creeks breeched their banks and threatened homes and lives.
A number of other roads in western North Carolina are closed by flooding or mudslides.
Localized rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches are expected Thursday, with more rain in the forecast through the weekend.
"This is an extremely risky situation", the warning said.
Flooding in rural Virginia that left at least three people missing has also damaged an unknown number of homes, washed out some roads and bridges and prompted at least one school system to close.
Alberto made landfall Monday afternoon as a subtropical storm in the Florida Panhandle, reaching maximum sustained winds of 45 miles per hour as it arrived in Laguna Beach, according to the hurricane center. "What we are hearing is 1 to 3 inches across the county this afternoon and this evening, possibly more than 5 inches in heavy rain", said Yaussy. They include Lake Lure and Chimney Rock Village. "Today is a hard day, and there will be many more ahead".
The Charlotte Fire Department deployed two rescue teams to the western part of the state to aid in the rescues.
On Monday, two journalists from South Carolina-based CNN affiliate WYFF were killed in Polk County, North Carolina.
On Tuesday, the storm fizzled into a subtropical depression as it rolled into Alabama but forecasters warned of potentially unsafe flash floods even as winds dropped to 30 miles per hour (48 km per hour).
