Joe Jackson, the patriarch of an American musical dynasty who started his son Michael, daughter Janet, and the Jackson 5 on the road to stardom but also verbally and physically abused them, has died at the age of 89, his family said on Wednesday. "The family needs to be by his bedside - that's our only intention in his final days". "With Janet, both he and Katharine spent a great deal of time on the "Fame" set with us and what struck me was the love and pride they had in all of their kids, but particularly Michael and Janet". You gave us strength, you made us one of the most famous families in the world, ' wrote his daughter LaToya on Wednesday. I am extremely appreciative of that, I will never forget our moments together and how you told me how much you cared. "Always. I love you grandpa".

The Jackson family patriarch was reportedly hospitalized earlier this month with a terminal illness, which sources said was stage 4 pancreatic cancer.

One of his other grandsons, TJ Jackson, posted a sweet tribute on Instagram, along with a pic of Joe: "You did the unthinkable". He was working as a crane operator at a steel plant in Gary, Indiana, when he took note of the musical talents of his sons. He influenced the world of music with the Jackson 5, Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, and others.

Michael Jackson's estate released a statement mourning Joe Jackson's passing: "We are deeply saddened by Mr. Jackson's passing and extend our heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Katherine Jackson and the family".

"He's very, very fail, he doesn't have long", son Jermaine Jackson told the outlet. Michael fired him as manager in 1983 and told Oprah Winfrey in 1993 that his father had beaten him.

He said Joe presided over rehearsals with a belt. "They're hollering, 'Dad, Dad, Dad, ' you know, and it gets to be - it sounds kind of amusing to me". "Once he ripped the wire cord off the refrigerator and whopped me with it". I just wish I could understand my father'.

"I'm glad I was tough because look what I came out with", Joe Jackson said in a 2013 CNN interview. People would come in and say, "Ralph, who are those kids out in the hall? And they treated everybody right".

The Jackson 5's big break came in 1967 when they won an amateur night competition at New York's historic Apollo theatre.

Earlier, Joe's son Jermaine had been putting up updates on Twitter about his father's health. "Dad would make me so mad at him that I'd try to get back at him and get beaten all the more".

Joe Jackson eventually moved the family from Gary to a mansion in Encino, California.

The group only went from strength-to-strength. His videos became entertainment trendsetters. Joe Jackson is known for successfully managing the Jackson 5 as a group, along with the solo efforts of his Janet and Michael.

Joe Jackson also appeared to hint at his own health struggles in a photo tweeted from his official Twitter account days just three days before his death. In 1968, the group auditioned in Detroit for Motown Records, and the grainy footage that survived shows the supernatural magnetism of Michael Jackson - then only 9 years old.
