Uber tries to extend reach, DC users can now rent bikes

San Francisco-based Getaround lets users find and instantly book vehicles from private auto owners, all through a mobile app. And in eight cities in the U.S., Uber users will be able to rent a vehicle from Getaround, a rental startup, right in the app.

Within the year, users should be able to buy and use tickets within Uber's app, Wired reported. The bikes are made in NY city while the service operates in San Francisco, and Washington D.C. Future plans include expanding to Sacramento, California and Providence, Rhode Island before the end of the year. By using the Getaround app, people skip the lines and paperwork at traditional rental auto counters, and the hassle of buying and maintaining a vehicle.


Uber is partnering with a variety of companies to offer rental cars and shared bikes in its app, adding more options to the company's signature on-demand rides. Its ride-hailing service is now in 73 countries worldwide and in 600 cities in the US. "By sharing our aggregated and anonymized trip data, Uber can help inform decisions about how to adapt existing infrastructure and invest in future solutions to make our cities more efficient", said Rob Khazzam, General Manager, Uber Canada, in a press release. "It is somewhat compelling to be able to get all your transportation through one platform". Uber also announced it acquired Jump on Monday. "Now you can take a bike to rent your vehicle and go buy groceries". MasterCard already works with Masabi to bring mobile ticketing to commutes and transit trips. He reiterated the company's commitment to autonomous vehicles, saying he believed "very important part of the solution of getting rid of auto ownership".

Soon, customers will be able to buy public transit tickets in the Uber app in 12 cities like NY (commuter rail), Los Angeles and New Orleans through a deal with online ticketing platform Masabi. In doing so, we will show that Uber is not just a really great product, but a really great company that is meaningfully contributing to society, beyond its business and its bottom line.
