Hannity funded the purchases with $17.9 million in loans he obtained with the help of the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Hannity also never disclosed that he was also a client of President Donald Trump's personal lawyer, Michael Cohen. Hannity insisted he is not Cohen's client and only spoke with him informally about real estate matters.
More than 870 homes in seven different states have been purchased over the past decade, ranging from large mansions to rentals for low-income families, according to the newspaper. At the time, Hannity was quick to blame then-president Barack Obama for the crisis, while not disclosing that he was scooping up those foreclosed properties for his empire. In January 2016, Hannity said there were "millions more Americans suffering under this president" partly because of foreclosures.
The Guardian added Hannity built part of his property portfolio with support from the Department for Housing and Urban Development (HUD), a fact he did not mention when praising HUD Secretary Ben Carson on his show.
The article appeared to be making a case out of the fact that Hannity's loan guarantees from 2014 were not revealed in an interview a year ago with HUD Secretary Ben Carson, despite the original date falling under the Obama administration. I had no role in, or responsibility for, any HUD involvement in any of these investments. I can say that every rigorous process and strict standard of improvement requirements were followed; all were met, fulfilled and inspected.
The shell companies used to buy the properties are limited liability companies (LLCs).
"He also declined to note his financial interest when he hosted Carson on Fox News last June for a discussion about Hud and housing", Swaine wrote.
Hannity's real estate attorney, Christopher Reeves, said in a statement that there's any significance in Hannity's real estate holdings.
"I doubt you would find it very surprising that most people prefer to keep their legal and personal financial issues private", he said.
The Guardian noted that Carson was not personally involved in any of Hannity's dealings but that the HUD secretary has the power to allow Hannity to convert rental complexes into sellable condos.
Perhaps that's why Fox News is now acting as Hannity's PR agent.
"While Fox News was unaware of Sean Hannity's informal relationship with Michael Cohen and was surprised by the announcement in court yesterday, we have reviewed the matter and spoken to Sean and he continues to have our full support", the network said in a statement.
