Baltimore Ravens sign former Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III

They announced on Wednesday the signing of former Washington Redskins and Cleveland Browns quarterback Robert Griffin III.

With Josh Woodrum the only other signal-caller now under contract besides Flacco, the Ravens were in the market for a backup but this isn't the veteran anyone expected.

The Baltimore Ravens have added a veteran quarterback after all.

"He will probably be here early next week to sign the deal".

The Heisman Trophy victor remained a free agent after the Browns released him in March 2017, but his return to the league was announced by the Ravens on Wednesday.

Griffin has started 40 games over the last five seasons.

"I felt like (Griffin) really wanted to be here". He led the Redskins back to the playoffs and was named the NFL's Rookie of the Year.

Head Coach John Harbaugh told a press conference: 'I'm very excited about it, the coaches are excited about it. Obviously, his personality, he's a confident guy.

Despite a celebrated rookie season with the Redskins, the latter of his career with the Redskins was plagued by poor performance and injuries.

Seven games into 2014 Cousins took over the job full-time and one year later Griffin was released.

Griffin was great his first year, completing 65.6 percent of his passes for 3,200 yards, 20 TDs and 5 INTs.

When last we saw Griffin on the field, he was one of the most inefficient quarterbacks in the NFL. He returned in 2013, but was benched after throwing 16 touchdown passes and 13 interceptions.

Griffin had one of the most precipitous falls in National Football League history: In 2012 he won the rookie of the year award, led Washington to the playoffs, and was hailed as the NFL's brightest young star.
