Embiid suffered an orbital bone fracture around his left eye in a March 28 collision with teammate Markelle Fultz and underwent surgery to fix the injury. He recently cleared the National Basketball Association concussion protocol.

Veteran Amir Johnson will likely start in place of the injured Embiid in Game 1 of the Sixers' first-round playoff series.

Additionally, guard Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot will sit out the game with patellar tendinitis in his right knee.

Joel Embiid's return will have to wait until Friday (AEST) at the earliest. Game 3 is Thursday night in Miami.

Coach Brett Brown shrugged when asked if Embiid's return, or lack thereof is linked to the success the Sixers have had without them.


The Sixers, who set an National Basketball Association record with 16 straight wins to end the season, got the rout in full swing with a raucous crowd behind them.
