This comes in the aftermath of the devastating news that former teammate and current Boston Celtics star Kyrie Irving will miss the rest of the regular season and the playoffs after undergoing arthroscopic surgery to fix the effects of a previous knee surgery.

When he had his last knee procedure on March 24, doctors discovered a bacterial infection had developed where some screws had been inserted to fix the fracture he suffered during the 2015 NBA Finals.

Irving will need 4-to-5 months of recovery. Terry Rozier will be asked to run the show at point guard, while 20-year-old Tatum and 21-year-old Brown will be primary scoring options.

"It's about to be insane, G", said Irving, hinting at the seemingly endless possibilities for the Celtics with these two young and dynamic All-Stars added to the roster.

On the latest episode of "Posting Up", The Athletic's Jay King discusses the impact of Kyrie Irving's season-ending knee surgery.

The Celtics begin life without Irving this season when they play against the Chicago Bulls this evening. It's simply a test of your perseverance and Will, to be present, even in the wake of what's going on.

The Celtics will have to regroup with the playoffs poised to start a few days after the April 11 regular-season finale.

Kyrie Irving had surgery on March 24 to remove a tension wire in his left knee, but an infection was found in his knee and the next surgery on Saturday will change that. That gives Danny Ainge more leverage should he include one of those players in a blockbuster deal for a third star.

"He was a big part of what we did here, a big part of winning the championship and even though he's on another team you still don't want to see anyone go through that", Lue said. "Irving is expected to return to basketball activities in 3-6 weeks".

"To ensure that no infection remains in the knee, the screws will be removed", the Celtics said.

Brad Stevens' team lack offensive efficiency without Irving as the former Cleveland Cavaliers star's 24.4 points per game average is 10 better than the next highest scorer in the Celtics team.

Gordon Hayward fractured his ankle within five minutes on opening night and Daniel Theis has also been ruled out for the season after tearing the meniscus in his left knee.

What does Irving's injury mean to the parties most affected by it?

Even though Boston's starting lineup for the playoffs won't be as intimidating, the team can not be counted out. Boston's first-round playoff opponent will likely be Miami, Milwaukee or Washington.
