The goal is to offer the kits at more than 2,000 stores by the end of the year. Consumers can either buy directly in store, or order kits online and pick them up later that day. The move comes a few weeks after Retail Leader reported exclusively that Walmart had greatly expanded its meal kit selection online.
The Walmart website has an expanded assortment of meal kits and other specialty items like snack boxes.
The company says it will start selling prepared meal kits nationwide.
The meals are offered between $8 and $15 and can be served within 15 minutes.
"Customers are busier than ever and we know getting a delicious dinner on the table can be a chore". "These delicious meals give the best or worst of cooks a fresh, easy option for dinner tonight, or later this week". The company also started offering meal-kit delivery late a year ago, which is not related with the in-store meal kits.
Although several other retailers have tried the meal kit option, majority haven't succeeded in this business venture. Meals are assembled daily in-store, and among the options are pre-portioned cooking kits available in deli sections that can turn the retailer's rotisserie chickens into meals like chicken fried rice, steak Dijon, basil garlic chicken and pork Florentine.
Pre-portioned meal kits include prepped ingredients that consumers can cook at home.
