Vikings check in on free-agent QB Drew Brees, report says

Jets should call Drew Brees if QB hits free agency

The New Orleans Saints failed to work out a contract extension with Drew Brees prior to Monday, which means the quarterback's agent is now free to negotiate with and field offers from other teams.

If you're Brees, you have to at least field that call.

The Minnesota Vikings now don't have any quarterbacks on their roster.

However, one big name came down from a report made on NFL Network and shared by Tom Pelissero on Twitter: the Vikings have looked into the availability of New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees.

For Brees, it's a chance to inflate his market value in his Saints negotiations. Pelissero's colleague Ian Rapoport said other teams have done the same.

Let's just pretend for a moment that Brees wants to head north.

The Vikings are among the frontrunners to sign former Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins.

That's somewhat frightening. The Vikings have plenty of salary cap space and one of the best defenses in the league. You're the greatest leader I've ever been around and I admire you so much as a player but more as a person. The Vikings' Super Bowl window isn't going to stay open for more than a handful of years, no matter who is lining up behind center.

What happens if the Vikes can't close the deal on either Cousins or Brees? For as swell as Case Keenum was in 2017, I don't think anyone would consider him elite.

The Eagles remain the clear favorite to win the NFC in 2018, even if the Vikings do win the Cousins Sweepstakes. That's the byproduct of Brees' last contract, signed in 2016, in which New Orleans opted to kick the can down the line not one or two but three seasons.
