More than 20,000 people are expected at the "March for Our Lives" rally nearest the Florida school where last month's deadly shooting occurred.

I was hopeful that Parkland would spark people to take action, but I also knew the road ahead would be hard.

"They like to believe we're puppets; they like to believe that we're being controlled by someone else because. they don't want to believe that human beings have this power because if they have this power then they might not need a gun", Deitsch said.

Metal detectors at school entrances may have to become the new normal for suburban districts.

Gun violence is a leading cause of premature death in the US, the American Public Health Association notes. I see the friends I went to school with, my parents' colleagues, my public school teachers and track coaches.

The bus of Excel students was one of many loaded with kids across the city, as bus after bus began the journey - from Mondawmin Mall and Patterson Park, Lake Clifton and Cherry Hill.

"We are not the future of our country, we are the country", she said. "I realized if we don't start now, it's never going to happen".

"I think if we can get some turnover in Congress with people who understand the importance of comprehensive gun legislation, that would be something we could tangibly look towards", Ilavarsan said. Beyond major cities, they will include demonstrations in Las Vegas, where a gunman killed 58 people at a country music festival past year; in Parkland, home to Stoneman Douglas; and in Jonesboro, Arkansas, where the community is marking the 20th anniversary of a middle school shooting that left four students and a teacher dead.
