Sanchez signed for Manchester United from Premier League rivals Arsenal, in a swap deal that saw or Henrikh Mkhitaryan move the opposite direction.

Appearing on Monday Night Football, Rooney insisted both clubs will benefit from the sensational trade.

For Rooney, the Frenchman is a classic box to box player who can do a bit of everything really well. "They are nearly getting to the level Barcelona were at four or five years ago".

"It's not nice to say but if you can't enjoy that style of play you won't enjoy football". It is not nice for me to say, but it is nearly ideal football at times.

"If I'm a right-back and I know Alexis Sanchez is coming from the left-hand side, I have to pay attention to him", he told ESPN FC.

"He has seen United have even deeper pockets that even they first imagined".

"At Arsenal he'll have players around him running off the ball and I think he'll kick on". "He has got aggression, passion, desire".

While Rooney acknowledged that it would be almost impossible for his former club to chase down City this season, he added that it would be a hard task next season as well if Pep Guardiola continues to improve his squad from a position of strength.

Manchester United record goal-scorer has highlighted the area he believes decorated coach Jose Mourinho needs to patch up during the upcoming offseason.

Back at the 2006 World Cup, Rooney was sent off in a quarterfinal match against Portugal. He is that good. "The goals he scores are all different types of goals".

"'You 11 players are better than their 11 players, go and win the game and work it out for yourselves on the pitch'".

He added on his future ambitions, having proved himself as a prolific frontman: "Next up is to win titles".
