Lincoln insists that the death of Carl is the biggest one in Walking Dead history, and he's right - at least for now. It instantly set off an social media firestorm, with fans grousing that they had been "blind-sided" and "betrayed". Just a week after the episode aired, that petition reportedly had garnered 55,000 signatures. Speaking again to Judith, he says, "Before mom died, she told me I was going to beat this world". Lincoln riffs in goofy fashion on the travails of starring in a serial TV show about the undead: "God I hate those freakin' zombies!" (See: Glenn's dumpster fake-out in Season 6).

Following the emotional midseason premiere of The Walking Dead, AMC has released two previews for the next episode, titled "The Lost and the Plunderers". This scene was even more surprising to you if you aren't familiar with Robert Kirkman's comic series.

He also gave the young girl his hat.

Beyond the matter of Rick's mortality, there's the matter of some adjustments to the vision viewers see at the end of the episode.

And Riggs delivered a rave-worthy performance.

After that, who knows?

In the early days of the COMIC The Walking Dead, the protagonist Rick loses a hand, which has not been kept in the series.
