One officer dead, two others shot while serving warrant near Atlanta

One of the deputies was shot through his bullet proof vest in the stomach and is undergoing surgery, McBrayer said.

The officer was with the Locust Grove Police Department while the deputies were with the Henry County Sheriff's Office.

The gunfire happened as the three officers tried to serve a warrant Friday morning in the town southeast of Atlanta.

A Locust Grove officer then arrived on the scene to assist.

The suspect is deceased, according to the sheriff.

He resisted and they called for backup.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Nelly Miles said Friday night that Henry County deputy Michael D. Corley was released from the hospital hours after Friday's shooting. At least 1 of the wounded deputies was rushed to Atlanta Medical Center.


Henry County Sheriff Keith McBrayer announced the death at an afternoon news conference.

It said 46 officers were killed by gunfire previous year, down from 64 in 2016. The second deputy was listed in fair condition.

The television station reports two of the lawmen were taken away by helicopter while the third was carried by ambulance.

Yellow police tape cordoned off an area of one home's front yard.

As a precaution, Locust Grove Elementary School said it was on lockdown, News4Jax reported. "It's scary because you never know who is in your neighborhood".
