Matt Patricia will likely choose Lions over Giants

But Patricia's hiring in Detroit is still speculation at this point, and will remain so until the Patriots' playoff run is concluded.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reported the news Sunday, noting New England Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia appears set to fill the role.

Should Patricia land in the Motor City, he'd be reunited with former personnel man and current GM Bob Quinn.

It's likely Patricia won't be the only Patriots coach to depart once the season comes to an end.

The Patriots, 14-3, will host the victor of Sunday's divisional matchup between the Jaguars and Steelers next Sunday in the AFC title game, since they beat the Titans on Saturday.

The Giants also reportedly have a fourth "sleeper" candidate in the event they lose out on both McDaniels and Shurmur, who are generating interest from the Indianapolis Colts and Arizona Cardinals respectively.

Beyond that, Patricia is well respected for his work with New England's defense and the way he's gone about building relationships inside the Patriots' locker room.

According to the team's website, Patricia has been the Patriots' defensive coordinator since 2012. Patricia and general manager Dave Gettleman apparently "hit it off" and it seemed as if the Giants was leaning in Patricia's direction.

The Lions didn't conduct any interviews for their vacancy last week, the second of their search to replace Jim Caldwell.

"At the end of the day, I want to take this team to the next level, and to me that's winning championships, that's winning playoff games and that's winning the Super Bowl", Quinn said. So, last year we went 9-7 and lost a playoff game, and this year we went 9-7 and didn't get the playoffs.
