Grumpy Cat Wins $710000 in Copyright Infringement Lawsuit

It has its own company named Grumpy Cat Ltd which is handled by cat's owner.

The cat's name is Tardar Sauce and she has attracted millions of followers on social media for her resting frowny face.

But Grumpy Cat Limited ended up suing Grenade due to it overusing the image by putting it on other products.

One intellectual property dispute that began in 2015 was ruled in favor of Grumpy Cat and her owners Wednesday, awarding Grumpy Cat Limited $710,001 in damages, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Originally posted on the social website Reddit by the brother of the cat's owner, Tabatha Bundesen, the image of the cat quickly spread as a meme with amusing text captions.

Since that time, Grumpy Cat has appeared everywhere.


United States coffee company Grenade spotted her and asked owner Tabatha Bundesen if they could come up with a deal over the use of the cat's image.

The judge ultimately sided with the cat, however, and ordered that the coffee company pay $750,000 in damages alongside a $1 nominal damage fee for breach of contract.

Her distinctive underbite and dwarfism became internationally recognised trademarks, sparking thousands of memes and gifs.

It also has an iced coffee, Grumpy Cat Grumppuccino, which led to a breach of contract suit against manufacturer Grumpy Beverages.

Grumpy Cat Limited sued when Grenade started selling T-shirt and roasted coffee that included the cat's image, according to court documents shared by The Washington Post. She later became the subject of a meme, in addition to becoming an official spokescat for Friskies and starring in the 2014 Lifetime movie Grumpy Cat's Worst Christmas Ever.

Grumpy Cat has made several appearances since 2012. "They are like Grumpy Cat". The cat's lawyer, however, noted that "Grumpy Cat feels vindicated and feels the jury reached a just verdict".
