According to reports, a resounding number of 128 votes in favour of rejecting the decision and nine against, while 35 countries abstained during a UN General Assembly emergency meeting which also witnessed the approval of a non-binding resolution.
"The inefficiency and overspending of the United Nations are well known", said US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley.
Turkey's diplomatic efforts confronting U.S. President Donald Trump's December 6 decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital will continue, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said yesterday in Ankara.
The U.N.'s 193-member General Assembly on December 21 adopted a resolution on Jerusalem with an overwhelming majority of them calling on the US to withdraw its recognition of the city as the capital of Israel.
At a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Trump was quoted by the UK's The Guardian newspaper as saying, "Let them (Nigeria and other countries benefitting from the United States financial aids) vote against us".
Nauert said at a press conference in Washington that the president, Donald Trump, "granted power" to the State Department to study possible responses to the outcome of the United Nations vote.
Haley appeared to imply a sense of weariness from the United States for supporting a huge range of nations that would not support the USA in turn. That is what the American people want us to do and it is the right thing to do.
He added, "I think we could have handled this particular case a little bit better".
In July, Trump had promised $639m in aid to assist people facing starvation in Nigeria, Somalia, South Sudan and Yemen. "Thank you, Nikki Haley", Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wrote on his Twitter account.
Last Thursday, Nigeria and 127 other countries kicked against that decision.
The 21 countries that were absent from voting on the resolution were: Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, El Salvador, Georgia, Guinea Bissau, Kenya, Mongolia, Myanmar, Republic of Moldova, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Samoa, San Marino, Sao Tome-Principe, Sierra Leone, Swaziland, Timor Leste, Tonga, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Zambia. "But this vote will make a difference to how Americans look at the United Nations and on how we look at countries (that) disrespect us in the United Nations and this vote will be remembered".
"The United States will remember this day in which it was singled out for attack in the General Assembly for the very act of exercising our right as a sovereign nation", Haley told the assembly in New York City. Today, we acknowledge that Jerusalem is the Israeli capital. The main reason for the success of the resolution against Trump was the Jerusalem is a holy site for multiple religions and recognising it as the capital of Israel would make it a de facto Jewish city.
