A spokesperson for the princess told TMZ that she's "very sorry and distressed" over the controversy regarding the brooch.

She has also been quoted in 1986 as saying that she came from a "better background than anyone else who's married into the royal family since the war, excepting Prince Philip".

While it isn't clear whether or not the princess wore the brooch to deliberately insult the future princess, it is clear that this isn't the first time Princess Michael has been involved in some side-eye worthy behavior when it comes to race.

Princess Michael of Kent, wife of Queen Elizabeth's first cousin Prince Michael of Kent, arrived to the lunch at Buckingham Palace with a brooch that appeared to be a "blackamoor" jewelry that depicted a black person with a gold crown and crystals.

Her mother is African-American and her father is Caucasian. Hopefully, the rest of her experience wasn't as eyebrow-raising as it must have been when she met with Princess Michael.
