Gas prices in Rockford are down more than 5¢ over the past week, bringing the average tank of gas locally below the national rate.
Compared to this time previous year, the cost of fuel is nearly 53 cents higher per gallon.
AAA found that for cars that recommend but don't require premium, the 2.7 percent average improvement in fuel economy and 1.4 percent average increase in horsepower don't balance out the price of premium fuel, which costs 20-25 percent more than regular fuel. It was only these states that saw prices rise, ruining an otherwise countrywide drop in gas prices.
With demand decreasing, AAA expects prices to keep getting lower as we head towards the end of the season. The national average has fallen 2.5 cents per gallon in the last week.
Last year, almost 1.5 million new vehicles sold in the U.
AAA tested six vehicles: a 3.5L Ecoboost Ford F-150, 6.2L V8 Cadillac Escalade, 5.0L Ford Mustang V8; and four-cylinder engines in a 2.0L Mazda MX-5 Miata, 1.8L Audi A3 and 1.4L Jeep Renegade.
You may think it's better than "Regular" gasoline because, well, it is called "Premium" and it costs more.
"It's still important to remember that if your vehicle requires the use of premium gasoline, that you should still use it", said Jenkins.
The small gain in fuel economy is more than outweighed by premium's higher price. But that's just an average.
Automakers sometimes advertise higher horsepower figures they attained using premium to attract enthusiasts, and buyers who don't know how little the difference will mean to them.
Since drivers of these vehicles are unlikely to see any benefit from using premium gasoline during typical city or highway driving, a combination of laboratory and on-road tests were performed to simulate extreme driving scenarios such as towing, hauling cargo, and aggressive acceleration. The story could obviously be different in vehicles that require premium, but in many cases these are high-performance cars where owners are happy to pay up for a boost in horsepower.
