Small Business Saturday highlights small businesses

While small business owners across the county will be offering sales and specials like Suter, a Shop Local Showcase will be taking place at The Pickwick Place, located north of Bucyrus at 1875 N. Sandusky Ave.

Please visit them in person, beginning Saturday and throughout the holiday season because when you buy here, you not only support your friends and neighbors, but local jobs, governments, schools, events and charities.

That's why they get their own day to draw in shoppers.

"Travel outside your comfort zone - and away from your computer screen - to discover an out-of-the ordinary shopping district with some trendy local stores", White said.

"I think small business is what drives the economy", said Rich LaVecchia, who owns Charleston Angler shops in Mount Pleasant and West Ashley. "And they're trying to promote that as a tourist destination along with the other byways that the state has as well", said Fleming.

Even if you intend to join the mass of Americans who shop online on CyberMonday, that doesn't mean you also can not and should not support the stores in our community.

Among the Manhattan Beach Chamber of Commerce, 88 percent of its members are independent business owners, Lipps said.

The holiday season is vital for their continued good health, so we again urge you to shop them, and whenever possible, to do so in person.

Sandwiched between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Small Business Saturday was born of an idea from credit card giant American Express in 2010.

"Coming in from the outside I really and truly don't feel like a number when I go to these local businesses and to me that speaks volumes", he said. "They're passionate about what they do".

This will be the third year the Sweeny chamber has promoted Small Business Saturday, and businesses including Litzler's Feed Store, Stewarts Food Store and the clothing store Modish Designs will be open for shopping Saturday, Gonzalez said.

The longtime boutique, at 928 Massachusetts St., is one of more than 50 downtown merchants participating in this year's Small Business Saturday, the mom-and-pop answer to Black Friday. When it comes to gift shopping, nothing says family and community better than the small local business.

Small Business Saturday is a nationwide promotion to encourage holiday shoppers to shop at local businesses.

"I am offering sales and specials from 8 a.m.to 8 p.m. Saturday", said Suter.

With over 130 unique shops, around 80 restaurants, 40 friendly bars, more than 40 attractions, and over 200 other services according to Wilmington Downtown Inc., residents and visitors are likely to find a gift that speaks to the culture of the Cape Fear Region. "If you take the time to look in our stores, we probably have what you want", he said.

Holiday shopping is about more than buying things.
