Staley's stance changed over the coming months when Trump invited championship teams from other sports to the White House but did not bestow that same honor on SC.
"We did hear from the White House about attending tomorrow's event, but we will not be able to attend", Staley said in a a statement.
Gamecocks coach Dawn Staley said Thursday that her team has declined an invite and instead will focus on the season ahead. Unfortunately for the team, whoever is running the Snapchat account for the White House apparently doesn't know the difference between a coxswain and a scrum.
SC was invited to the White House earlier this month, but the Gamecocks will be unable to attend. "I got bigger fish to fry than worry about an invitation".
Trump sparred with professional athletes earlier this year when National Basketball Association star Stephen Curry said his championship-winning Golden State Warriors didn't wish to meet with Trump.
When South Carolina defeated Mississippi State in last April's national championship game, Staley was adamant that the Gamecocks would celebrate the achievement at the White House.
Some teams have already made the trip to Washington. The Cubs also had the larger and more traditional visit with President Barack Obama in January, four days before the Trump inauguration. She represented the U.S. Olympic team when George W. Bush was president in 2004.
The North Carolina men's basketball team said last week that it won't visit the White House because of a scheduling conflict.
