Moorhead named head coach at MSU

Mississippi State is Considering Penn State's Joe Moorhead for Head Coaching Vacancy

The new head coach will inherit a talented quarterback in Bulldogs junior Nick Fitzgerald, who rushed for 984 yards and 14 touchdowns and passed for 1,782 yards and 15 scores.

A form of that sentence surely was uttered under the breath of many Big Ten coaches over the past two seasons, and publicly by the fan bases of their schools.

Should Moorhead be the choice, he will take over a program that will have played in a bowl game eight consecutive seasons.

In the first year Moorhead was given the Penn State offense the Lions finished 21st in scoring offense (37 PPG in 2016) and he followed that up with the seventh overall scoring offense this past season averaging 41.7 points per game. The Nittany Lions came back to beat Wisconsin in the 2016 conference championship game, fired shot for shot with Southern California in an epic Rose Bowl and accumulated a 19-3 mark over their last 22 games, all thanks in large part to Moorhead's RPO, high-octane system. They're at 453.3 in 2017.

-The Tennessee Volunteers reportedly are turning their focus to Purdue's Jeff Brohm to fill their head coaching vacancy after Oklahoma State's Mike Gundy took himself out of the running. He went 38-13 at his alma mater with three playoff appearances in four years.

Moorhead's resume is boosted by the fact that he also has had head coaching experience.

His only other FBS experience other than Penn State is at Akron (2004-08) and CT (2009-11); he was UConn's offensive coordinator when the Huskies went to the Fiesta Bowl in 2010. He was an assistant and later offensive coordinator at Georgetown from 2000-03 and then was an assistant and later offensive coordinator at Akron from 2004-08. We are so appreciative of everything that he has done for Penn State football in his two years. He has been a great mentor and coach to our student-athletes and a friend to me and our staff. We wish him & his family the absolute best at Mississippi State!
