Chris Jericho's showdown with Kenny Omega at January's Wrestle Kingdom 12 will mark the first time that he has competed outside the WWE banner since 1999. Despite weeks of trolling each other on Twitter, seeing Jericho appear on NJPW programming was unexpected and shocking to say the least.
Following the promo, Omega would speak in Japanese and accept the match.
However, with Jericho involved with WWE and Omega at New Japan, a match seemed unlikely.
Now, there may even be a "bit" of tension between Jericho and WWE over recent events. They're billing the bout as "Alpha vs. Omega".
Ex-WWE writer Andrew Goldstein posited that Vince McMahon and Jericho had planned Y2J's challenge to Omega as a way of introducing the Bullet Club leader to WWE, but that doesn't appear to be the case based on this report from WrestleZone.
Furthermore, Chris Jericho talked about his upcoming cruise on Killing the Town recently and it may shed some light on why he's working with New Japan/Ring of Honor. This also brings Jericho's contract and status with WWE in question and how he'd be able to pull off something like this.
That said, it's interesting Jericho will be wrestling in Japan after spending so much time with the WWE.
