Keck Hospital of USC Earns an "A" Grade for Patient Safety

What are New Jersey's safest hospitals? Here's how they all fared in new national survey.

With 46.2 percent of participating hospitals receiving an A, Colorado ranked 10th in the USA and second among states in the Rocky Mountain West, behind only Idaho. Leapfrog awarded 662 "B" grades, 964 "C" grades, 159 "D" grades and 15 "F" grades. The fact that hospitals overall haven't improved performance in the last five years might be because they are inundated with many other kinds of public surveys and reports that also evaluate their performance, said Francois de Brantes, vice president and director of the Center for Payment Innovation at the Altarum Institute. "All seven Rhode Island hospitals included in the report received an A. In 2012, the state ranked 50th for its hospitals" grades. "By making the Hospital Safety Grades public, we've galvanized major changes in these states and many communities", said Leah Binder, president and CEO of Leapfrog.

"Patient safety and quality improvement are top priorities in health care, and at Keck Hospital, we are always challenging ourselves to find new opportunities to elevate care and eliminate patient harm", says Stephanie L. Hall, MD, chief medical officer of Keck Medicine of USC. "At the very least, everyone should get an A on patient safety". OR has climbed 48th in the first safety grade report in 2012 to eighth.

For example, Oregon, Hawaii, and Wisconsin all have active coalitions dedicated to patient safety within their local communities and hospitals. "We congratulate the clinicians, Board, management and staff of McDowell Hospital for showing the country what it means to put patient safety first".

"Errors and infections in hospitals are the third leading cause of death in America, and people deserve to know which of their hospitals are best at preventing them", said Binder.

Maryland had previously been exempted from reporting key hospital safety metrics.

How safe Beaufort County hospitals keep you from errors, injuries and infections depends on which one you're a patient at, according to a report released Tuesday.

Conemaugh Memorial in Johnstown and UPMC Bedford received the top grade of "A" for fall 2017.
