Celebrity supermodel Gigi Hadid has dropped out of an upcoming Victoria's Secret fashion show in China, following a strong backlash to a video she featured in earlier this year. The model took to Twitter to share the news, writing, "I'm so bummed I won't be able to make it to China this year".
Hundreds of furious Chinese people told the 22-year-old she "wasn't welcome" in the city when the lingerie brand hosted it's annual show there, and now the star has pulled out of her appearance.
"Love my VS family, and will be with all my girls in spirit!"
Gigi Hadid won't walk in the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in Shanghai, China, this year. Fashionista wrote that Russian models Julia Belyakova, Kate Grigorieva, and Irina Sharipova, as well as Ukranian model Dasha Khlystun will no longer be taking part in the show, according to Instagram fan accounts. It seems the Chinese government isn't making life easy for organisers.
The announcement is the second apparent snag to hit the United States lingerie maker's A-list underwear extravaganza set for Monday, following reports that three Russians and one Ukrainian model had failed to obtain Chinese visas.
"I am so excited!"
The VS Fashion Show airs Tuesday, Nov. 28 at 10 p.m. on CBS.
But there are also comments on Bella's Instagram post condemning her, since she was the one who recorded and posted the video in question in the first place. Given Hadid's skirting of the issue-aside from a relatively secret apology on the Chinese social media site, Weibo-it's likely that the model isn't comfortable with the questions that might ensue if she was to go on with the show.
While the show hasn't officially confirmed the musical acts for 2017, it's been widely reported that Harry Styles, Katy Perry and Miguel (not Taylor Swift) are set to perform.
