Sturridge not the same since Suarez left Liverpool claims Carragher

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has admitted that he would have been open to signing Romelu Lukaku from Everton if club rivalry didn't preclude him from making a bid.

Sunday's draw at Newcastle left the Reds in seventh place in the table, already seven points adrift of the top two, Manchester City and Manchester United, after as many games.

"Because [Alvaro] Morata is now really working and is a flawless fit, because Lukaku is the ideal fit for Manchester United, because Harry Kane is now scoring [for Tottenham], because [Alexandre] Lacazette is doing well... we had other things we felt we needed to do first".

Speaking after Liverpool's 1-1 draw with Newcastle, Carragher said: "Because he doesn't play much now, whenever we talk about Sturridge we keep going back to that season when Liverpool almost won the league - he was devastating with Luis Suarez".

Gerrard has also been impressed with the manner of the player adding, "I love the player and I love the character".

Defensively, the Reds will always experience moments of madness this season until they upgrade their personnel, particularly at centre-back, and adopt a slightly more cautious style of play, where the full-backs are not always wide forwards. There is a lot of excitement about. "So far it doesn't lead to the results you want, but we can not create bigger chances". We are all fans.

"But we are seven games in and Liverpool are capable of going on a long run of winning games".

The German is, of course, right to back his side at this early stage but after the worldwide break things don't get any easier for the Reds with Manchester United coming to Anfield and a trip to Tottenham on the horizon.

"We have had hard moments and we have to work on our thing". Although there are expected to be some options from London to Liverpool after the game, fans travel from many other locations - including even overseas - to regularly support two such popular and worldwide clubs. Yet they will be used to this responsibility by now, and certainly for the foreseeable future they need to start firing once again for Liverpool to reach the top four.
