Both schools now safely reside inside the top 10, the result of some very nice performances in Week 6. The eighth-ranked Horned Frogs have already beaten Oklahoma State but proved they were for real on Saturday by surviving No. 23 West Virginia in a back-and-forth, 31-24 win.
There wasn't a rogue family member rushing the field in Austin, but it was certainly a Texas-sized family affair for the Longhorns with their 40-34, double-overtime win over Kansas State featuring their own "Bush Push" victor starring Chris Warren III and ever-improving starting quarterback Sam Ehlinger.
Faced with a similar punt situation, Michigan State did what Michigan couldn't in 2015 and successfully got it away, into the end zone for a touchback.
Iowa State plants the flag at Oklahoma.
Week 6 wasn't expected to have many surprises, so we were as blindsided as MI and Oklahoma by what transpired.
Alabama and Clemson still hold the top spots. They remain No. 1 on my ballot. They had no problem knocking off OR last night, and very much look ready to win the PAC-12. I'll lay the reasonable line with the better team on the road.
Oh and hello, NC State, just steadily moving up. They won by nine. But what the teams do around you matters too.
As usual, the number in parentheses indicates last week's ranking, if it's different than this week's. Neither team could move the ball at all. "I think it's a rivalry. Madre had some really nice plays".
Sealing the deal, the feisty Stanford defense picked off passes on the next two drives to essentially wrap up a win in a hard environment on the road in Salt Lake City. Currently, the Wolverines are ranked seventh in the country and boast an undefeated record. Look for Miller to continue leading the 4-1 Tigers to more victories and an appearance in a bowl game. MI stayed a spot ahead of them because Michigan's loss was not almost as bad. O'Korn & Co. converted good field position into a quick score, their only touchdown of the game.
San Diego State moves up three spots for me because the Aztecs were FINALLY able to dismantle a bad opponent in UNLV, winning 41-10.
The popular Saturday morning college football show will broadcast from Harrisonburg this week before the Dukes, the top-ranked team in the FCS, play Villanova, which is ranked No. 12. But that's with the benefit of hindsight and a fresh pair of eyes on my ballot a few days later. Michigan, then at Ohio State and Michigan State is about as brutal a slate as the conference can hand out. The win will bump the Spartans up into the bottom of the AP Top 25 this week.
