A Treasury representative said the office considered the utilization of a military flying machine among a scope of choices due to the need to guarantee secure interchanges amid Mr Mnuchin's broadened travel.

A spokesman for the treasury told ABC that Mnuchin, 54, a former Goldman Sachs banker, sought the military jet to ensure he had a secure line of communication but aborted the request after it became clear there were other ways to maintain contact.

His use of government aircraft was already under scrutiny after he took Linton on a trip to Louisville and Fort Knox in Kentucky in July.

According to the spokesman, Treasury officials withdrew the request after finding an alternative way to communicate about government matters securely.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin asked for a costly government plane to fly to his European honeymoon earlier this year.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and GOP members of the Budget Committee met Tuesday with two top Trump administration officials to make progress on forging the budget plan, which is required to stave off potential Democratic blocking tactics and pass the subsequent tax bill only with GOP votes.

"Effectively it was a portable office so that I could be available", he added.

Mnuchin's trip to Kentucky included a stop at a chamber luncheon in Louisville and Fort Knox, where he, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, and others watched the August 21 eclipse.

Mnuchin's trip raised suspicion and his wife, Louise Linton, lashed out at a commenter on her Instagram post that showcased the couple deboarding a government plane in Lexington.

"Such trips can cost tens of thousands of dollars to operate per hour", according to the news site.

A scandal also erupted after Linton flaunted her designer duds in an Instagram photo of her disembarking the government plane in Kentucky.
