France takes a 2-1 lead

Davis Cup: France, Serbia level at 1-1 on day one

If able to cause an upset on Day 1 against Nick Kyrgios, Belgium will likely be in prime position to win the tie on Day 3, where Darcis will play the fifth and final tie, against either John Millman or Jordan Thompson.

As the Davis Cup semifinals get underway on Friday, players from all over the world will be competing for much more than ranking points.

France and Serbia will collide in the other Davis Cup semi-final ahead of November's grand finale. Obviously a lot of expectation going in there and a lot of people beating me up, as usual.

Australia, the 28-time Davis Cup champions, travel to Brussels to take on Belgium, who are yet to win a Davis Cup title, although they were finalists in 2015.

Though Kyrgios has had a tumultuous 2017 as a singles competitor, the 22-year-old Canberran has delivered the goods during the premier global team event in men's tennis.

"There are players out there that are more dedicated, that want to get better, that strive to get better every day, the one-percenters".

Belgian Davis Cup hero David Goffin beat back a strong challenge from John Millman, 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-3, 7-5 staking the host to a 1-0 lead.

The Frenchman's inconsistent serve came back to haunt him in the last two sets and Lajovic sealed the match at the net with a backhand volley, raising both arms in triumph.

"He put me under real pressure and I had to dig in at times. I wanted to win but I also wanted to make it as physical as possible".

Belgian's medical team have been working round the clock to ensure Goffin's presence after the Belgian star injured his left knee at the US Open.

Japan have preserved their world group status with playoff wins in the past two years and will hope to complete the treble by winning Saturday's doubles. Kyrgios is 9-0 in sets this season during Davis Cup matches and has played a certain brand of tennis that many of his fans would like to see year round.

"We have full belief in that he can do a job for us".

"Today was a big step towards achieving that but we have to keep our feet on the ground", said Japan captain Satoshi Iwabuchi.
