Reliance Jio to start delivering 6 million JioPhones from today

Reliance has officially confirmed that they have started shipping the 6 million units of the JioPhone in a phased manner. "Therefore, delivery of JioPhone will start this Sunday in rural areas and small towns", the channel partner told PTI.

Jio had earlier said that it aims to deliver 100-150 million phones in the next six months (five million a week), but sources close to the firm had then said it was bracing for competition from other feature phone makers as well.

Customers in rural areas and small cities have a reason to rejoice as they will get the handset before their urban counterparts, according to a PTI report citing a Reliance Jio channel partner. Enter your order number to track your device. However, the entire amount will be refunded on the return of the Feature phone, after three years.

The Reliance Chairman Mukesh Ambani said that the new Jio feature phone will fill the digital void between the rural and urban areas in India.

Pre-bookings for the Rs 1,500-JioPhone began on August 24 against payment of a refundable deposit of Rs. 500, with the remainder Rs. 1,000 to be paid at the time of delivery. Reliance Jio is said to be aiming at the sale of 6 million units of JioPhone which is estimated to be around 10 percent of India's total mobile phone market in a quarter.

The mass-market phone that is being offered for free effectively - the company takes a three year interest-free refundable deposit of Rs 1,500 - is key to Jio's bid to quickly scale up its almost 130 million user base by targeting the 500-million feature phone customers. JioPhones have pre-loaded Jio apps for messaging and entertainment. Besides those who managed to book the phone, more than 10 million consumers are waiting to place an order. Each user will receive the delivery schedule and details of the offline store their unit can be picked up from via SMS. The Jio TV app allows users to view live TV on the phone. By the 1.2GHz dual-core SPRD 9820A/QC8905 processor, the smartphone has powered and came with 512MB of RAM. You can expand this storage up to 128GB via microSD card. The Reliance JioPhone even gets a 2MP rear and a VGA front camera.
